UCSD Facilities Update: Master Planning
Overview
Throughout the 2024-25 school year, a group of parents, staff, and community members came together to serve on a UCSD Facilities Master Planning Committee. Committee members participated in four workshops led by DLR Group in order to review existing facilities, understand current and future challenges, and outline facility planning priorities.
The following priorities were shared with the City of Urbandale as well as the UCSD Board of Directors during the School Board Meeting on June 9, 2025. You’re welcome to view the full DLR Group Presentation here.
Facility Planning Priorities
The UCSD Facilities Master Planning Committee identified the following priorities. Please know, as of June 2025, no official decisions have been made as the District is still in the initial information-gathering stage in order to understand the viability of these potential projects and costs associated. The District will be discussing financials at an upcoming School Board Meeting (possibly in August). As the facility planning process continues, the District will be conducting numerous community meetings in order to share various scenarios and request stakeholder feedback regarding preferences for each scenario.
Initial Priorities
- Softball Field Relocation: Moving the softball field out of Lions Park to another District-owned location in accordance with the City of Urbandale’s Master Plan for Lions Park. Exploring the possible creation of a baseball and softball complex on the open land north of Urbandale Middle School.
- District Administration Office & Maintenance Facility: Exploring the possibility of owning District Administration Office space instead of leasing. The current cost to lease two District Office spaces in the Aurora Business Park plus a separate storage facility is $14,707 per month ($176,484 per year). A possible location for a District Administration Office and Maintenance Facility would be on the Rolling Green property.
- High School Career and Technical Education (CTE): Construction of a CTE building on district-owned property would make CTE classes more accessible to UHS students throughout the day. Currently, only UHS students with the ability to drive to DMACC during the school day are able to attend certain CTE classes offered by DMACC. With additional space, the high school could expand programming by offering CTE classes such as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and more construction, welding, automotive, and video production classes (plus many more!). Possible locations for a CTE building include the UHS campus or the Jensen Elementary property.
- UMS Football / Track: Refurbish the existing Urbandale Middle School football field and construct a track around the field.
